ABOUT US

Starting a Phi Sigma chapter at Penn is two-fold: We hope to bring together a network of students who have a passion for research and to promote involvement in the community in order to stimulate deeper interest in biological research. The chapter will also provide members volunteer opportunities in the city of Philadelphia outside of the laboratory to complement their skills obtained in science research such as annual city wide, regional wide science fair judging as well as science fair mentorship. The newly founded Chapter at University of Pennsylvania is currently partnering with other organizations in hope to achieve our mission. Additionally, Phi Sigma offers a research travel grant every semester to those who attend an international, national, state or regional meeting outside of the student’s institution. Recruitment for the new inducting class will be made every semester.

The Phi Sigma Biological Sciences Honor Society was founded at Ohio State University in March 1915 and was also made member of the Association of College Honor Societies in 1950. There are currently 32 active chapters and approximately 50,000 members. They are the only nationally recognized honor society for both undergraduates and graduates in the Biological Sciences. The main purpose of the group is to recognize and encourage high scholarship and/or leadership achievement in either a broad or specialized field of study. The Phi Sigma Society is a member of the Association of College Honors Societies, the American Institute of Biological Sciences and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
